EDINBURG – V.J. Bunner and Jude Vidrine tried to spur a two-out rally in the top of the ninth on Friday night, but ultimately the efforts proved fruitless as the Lamar baseball team saw its 12-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-4 loss to Texas-Pan American at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Darian Johnson, who ranks among the Southland Conference leaders in runs batted in this season, stepped to the plate, but was only able to muster a groundball, ending the threat for the Broncs and dropping the Cardinals to 16-3 on the year.

UTPA, which answered an eighth-inning comeback attempt with the go-ahead score in the bottom of the frame, improved to 4-9 on the year.

Vidrine keyed the eighth inning rally, leading off with a double and later scoring on an Aaron Olivas fielder’s choice to tie the game up at 4-4. The junior out of Nederland finished the night 2-for-4 with a score.

Zach Luevanos was the only other Card to register multiple hits, going 2-for-4 as well, and overall the Broncs out-hit LU 11-8.

Eric Harrington got the start on the mound for the Red and White, and it looked to be a strong performance by the right-hander, allowing just two runs in six innings of work. Unfortunately, the Broncs struck for two more scores when the senior marched to the mound in the seventh, and he finished with four earned runs on eight hits over 6.1 frames.

The Cards gave Harrington a lead early with three runs in the second. Seth Dornak belted a one-out home run to left, and a Bumpers single and Luevanos double brought in the other two.

Dornak finished 1-for-3 at the plate, and Bumpers was 1-for-4.

The Broncs claimed a run in both the second and sixth innings before grabbing their first lead of the game in the seventh.

Following Vidrine’s equalizing score, UTPA led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, and a Jacob Huckabay two-out double sealed the win.

Chase Angelle was pegged with the loss after allowing one score in 1.1 innings pitched, but Trevor Swint gave up the eventual game-winning hit.

Lamar will look to bounce back on Saturday vs. UTPA, and first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
