BEAUMONT - Lamar University has filled out its men's basketball coaching staff for the upcoming season with the addition of former Morehead State assistant Joseph Price, announced head coach Pat Knight on Tuesday.
Price, who also spent time as an assistant at Ball State and IUPUI, helped Morehead State to the second round of this year's NCAA Tournament. In his only season at MSU, Price helped the Eagles finish with a 25-10 record and win the Ohio Valley Tournament.
"I am happy to have Joseph Price as a part of our staff," Knight said. "I have known Joe a long time. I wanted somebody who was not just a good recruiter, but a very good coach who can relate to the players. I think not only can he help us as a program, but help our younger assistants learn the ropes."
Price, who was involved in all aspects of the MSU basketball program, helped last season's Eagles match the highest single-season win total in school history. Additionally, MSU's Kenneth Faried was named AP Third-Team All-America and was the National Defensive Player of the Year according to the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 2010-11.
Prior to his arrival at Morehead, Price spent three seasons at Ball State where he helped the Cardinals win the Mid-American Conference West Division in 2008-09. Price, who is known to be an outstanding recruiter, helped Ball State sign one of the top 80 classes in the country that season.
Price began his college coaching career at IUPUI in 2002-03, helping the Jaguars advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. While at IUPUI, Price recruited and coached current San Antonio Spur George Hill.
After a stellar prep career at Marion High School in Marion, Ind., Price played four seasons at Notre Dame for current ESPN analyst Digger Phelps. The Irish went 84-37 while Price was on the roster, including a runner-up finish at the postseason National Invitation Tournament during his sophomore season.
Price, who was named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's 2007 Men's Silver Anniversary Team, played 115 games for the Irish to rank 16th all-time in school history in games played. Following his senior season, Price was a seventh round draft pick of the Washington Bullets.
Price spent 13 seasons playing professionally overseas, with stops in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Spain. Price helped St. Prex win the 1988 Switzerland Second Division League-B Championship, and also played with current Dallas Mavericks superstar Dirk Nowitzki for German club DJK S. Oliver Wurzburg.
A three time All-North Central Conference selection while at Marion HS for Indiana Hall of Fame coach Bill Green, Price began his coaching career as the junior varsity coach at Indianapolis Manual HS in 2001-02.
A 1986 graduate with a degree in sociology from Notre Dame, Price has one daughter, Naomi.
