BEAUMONT - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi starter Ian Campbell threw a complete game four-hitter as the visiting Islanders picked up a 5-0 Southland Conference baseball victory over Lamar on Friday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The two teams will continue the three-game series on Saturday afternoon with a scheduled 2 p.m. first pitch. Lamar will also honor the Strait family on Saturday for their generous donation in building the H.D. "Tex" and Emma Strait Baseball Training Facility.
With the loss, the Cardinals and Islanders fall into a tie in the SLC standings at 7-6. Lamar is now 20-13 on the year, while AMCC improved to 22-12.
LU starter Shane Hamaker got into trouble in the fourth inning, putting the first three batters on base before being pulled for John Gilligan. Designated hitter Jumpy Garcia drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly.
The Islanders would add two more runs in the fourth inning to grab a 3-0 lead. AMCC had just one hit in the inning, but benefitted from two walks, a hit batter and a pair of errors by LU left fielder Kevin Roebuck.
In the bottom of the fourth, LU right fielder Jeff Abt smacked a one-out double to right field. Wade Mathis followed with a comebacker to the pitcher, and Abt was tagged out trying to advance to third.
The Islanders would add a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning off of Gilligan, who would give way to Tommy Roebuck with no outs and a runner on third base.
Campbell needed 150 pitches on the night in moving his record to 5-2 with the win. The right hander did walk six batters, but also struck out five and never allowed a Cardinal base runner to reach third base.
Hamaker took the loss for the Cardinals, falling to 4-4 on the year. Hamaker allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits in three innings of work.
Abt, Ted Zentek, Joey Latulippe and Jude Vidrine each had a hit for the Cardinals. Abt extended his hitting streak to six games with his fourth inning double.
