ARLINGTON, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team suffered its first Southland Conference loss of the season, dropping a 5-2 decision at 63rd-ranked UT Arlington (8-2 overall, 4-0 SLC) on Sunday.
Lamar's Diana Mendez remained unbeaten as she moved to 10-0 at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Katarina Micochova. Lamar's other win came at No. 2 singles as Kaltrina Harbuzi posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Linda Aqvist.
Lamar's Mariaryeni Gutierrez suffered her first loss of the season in singles competition, falling to Daiana Negreanu 4-6, 6-3, 10-5.
"UT Arlington was a better team than us today," Lamar coach David Wong said. "Mariaryeni's match at first singles was a hard-fought one. It's always tough when it comes down to a tiebreaker."
Lamar (9-2, 3-1) will host Cleveland State in a non-conference match at 2 p.m. Friday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
