BEAUMONT - Houston Baptist University roughed up seven Lamar University pitchers for 17 hits Wednesday afternoon in pulling away to a 12-4 victory over the Cardinals.
In winning the series two games to zero, the Huskies outscored the Cardinals 14-4 and outhit them 21-15. The Huskies' 17 hits in Wednesday's finale matched the high yielded by the Cardinals this season (in a 10-9 loss to North Dakota State).
The Huskies rocked Lamar starter Tommy Roebuck for three runs and three hits, including a pair of triples by Paul Prestera and Johnathon Moore, in the first inning.
The Cardinals narrowed the deficit to one by scoring two third-inning runs. The first crossed on an RBI groundout by Quentin Luquette, and the second came in on a sacrifice fly by Wade Mathis.
The Huskies stretched their lead to 7-2 with a four-run fifth, and the best the Cardinals could muster after that was a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Aaron Buchanan scored the first run on a bases-loaded wild pitch committed by winning pitcher Jay Reese, and Luquette accounted for the second with a sacrifice fly.
Buchanan, Anthony Moore and Andy Mena contributed two hits each to Lamar's eight-hit attack. Josh Gonzales led HBU by going 3-for-5.
While the loss - Lamar's third straight - dropped the Cardinals to 17-13 on the season, the Huskies improved to 10-14.
Coach Jim Gilligan's Cardinals will have only one day to regroup before opening a crucial three-game Southland Conference series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night. At 4-8 in their league games, the Cards are tied for ninth place with the Islanders in the standings.
