BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team came up short in its attempt to hand Southland Conference-leading UT Arlington its first SLC loss of the year Sunday.

Lamar (8-8 overall, 3-3 SLC) continued to get solid performances at first and second singles, but the Lady Cardinals suffered a 5-2 loss to the Mavericks (7-4, 7-0).

Lamar's Mariaryeni Gutierrez improved to 15-0 in singles competition with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Monika Hadvigerova at No. 1 singles, while Kaltrina Harbuzi boosted her singles record to 12-2 with a 6-7, 6-1, 10-5 decision over Kiara Jagosova at No. 2 singles.

Harbuzi teamed with Natalia Mayagoitia for a win at second doubles, but the Lady Cardinals dropped the other two doubles matches.

Lamar returns to action at 2 p.m. Friday with a conference match at UTSA.
