Ryan Lormand scored from second on a ground ball through the left side in the eighth inning when Tyler Link bobbled the ball in left field allowing Houston to take a 3-2 win over Lamar at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Tuesday.
The score had been knotted at 2-2 after each scored a single run in the third and fourth innings. Lormand hit a single up the middle that just slipped under reliever Matt Gore's glove and then stole second to get into scoring position.
Link singled in the ninth but was thrown out on a stolen base attempt to end the game. He led Lamar (26-18) with a 3-for-5 game on three singles.
Gore (0-1) pitched the final three innings and suffered his first loss of the season in 13 appearances. He did strike out four as the LU staff combined for seven. Houston's Jimmy Raviele (2-1) earned the win with three innings of two-hit ball, and Chase Dempsay worked the ninth for his seventh save.
Houston (27-17) got two hits apiece from Lormand and Bryan Tully. The Cougars stranded nine runners to eight for the Cardinals.
UH struck for the game's first run in the third inning. Blake Kelso drew a walk and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Bryan Pounds. Jimmy Cesario then lined a one-out single through the right side for a 1-0 Cougar lead.
The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the frame, following Logan Pace's double to right center and a Cougar fielding miscue in the outfield. Link singled to center and Pace stopped at third, then re-started and scored when centerfielder Zak Presley mishandled the grounder.
UH regained the lead in the fourth inning with another single run. After Presley's single and a Chris Wallace fielder's choice, Kelso slapped an RBI-single into left field to plate Presley for a 2-1 lead.
Lamar again answered in the bottom of the frame and knotted the game at 2-2 on Nik Gumeson's groundout, which allowed Travis Dunson to score from third base.
The Cardinals return to action this weekend when they play host to Southeastern Louisiana. Friday's game will begin at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's at 2 p.m. and Sunday's finale at 1 p.m.
