April 1, 2008

Box Score

LAFAYETTE, La. - Louisiana-Lafayette executed a pair of squeeze plays, including one in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Lamar 3-2 at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field on Tuesday night.

The loss snaps Lamar's four-game win streak and sends the Cardinals into the weekend at Nicholls State with a 18-19 overall record. ULL improves to 12-14.

With the score tied at 1-1, ULL took the lead when Brian Bowman scored on a Jordan Poirrier sac fly to deep right field. The Cardinals got out of the inning when Jeff Vickers threw out Nolan Gisclair trying to steal second.

Travis Dunson led off with a four-pitch walk. David Moore line the first pitch he saw off ULL closer Justin Robichaux and when Porrier's throw from second went into the Lamar dugout, it allowed Moore to go to third and pinch-runner Tylor Prudhomme to score from first and tie the game at 2-2 with no outs. But the Cardinals were unable to get Moore home as Vickers flied out to shallow center, pinch-hitter Jeremiah Sammy and right-fielder Tyler Link both struck out.

After Dillon Guillory had a pinch-hit single to lead off the bottom of the ninth, pitcher John Ross Ramirez slipped and let Matt Goulas' bunt go through his legs for an error. Scott Hawkins struck out for the first out. Then the Rajin Cajuns loaded the bases when shortstop Nik Gumeson failed to touch second on a potential double play - allowing the bases to be loaded. Leadoff hitter Josh Logan laid down a bunt while Greg Fontenot raced home from third ahead of Chris Dunkin's flip to Vickers for the game-winning run.

The Cajuns scored their first run in the bottom of the first on a squeeze play. Lamar tied the game in the fourth when Dunkin doubles to lead off, moved to third on a single through the left side by Dunson and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Vickers.

Lamar used seven pitchers and held ULL hitless through the first six innings. Ramirez (0-1) suffered the loss, while Randall Bulliard (1-0) earned the win after replacing Robicheaux took the line drive off his body in the ninth.

Dunson went 2-for-3 with a walk for the Cardinals. Brian Taylor also had a hit in the game.

Lamar will return to action on Friday with a road series at Nicholls. First pitch at Didier Field is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the internet at lamarcardinals.com.
