LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Tristan Worrell scored a career-high 21 points with six-consecutive late that extended Lamar's lead to 14 en route to a 76-67 win over Ohio on the first day of the Marques Maybin Classic at Freedom Hall.
Worrell was 8-for-9 in the game and scored 17 points in the second half. He had 14 in the final 11 minutes alone. He grabbed six rebounds and had one assist in 23 total minutes.
Lamar's (6-1) backcourt duo of Kenny Dawkins and Brandon McThay combined for 39 points and six of the Cardinals' seven 3-pointers. It was a Dawkins triple from NBA-range that gave Lamar a 44-41 lead with 16:24 left. That keyed an 18-7 run over the next eight minutes that pushed Lamar's advantage to 59-48 with 8:20 to go.
Individually, Dawkins had 19 and McThay had 18.
Lamar also was rock solid from the free throw line down the stretch, making 12-straight over the final 4:22. For the game the Cardinals were 23-of-31.
Ohio (3-2) cut the lead to 70-64 with 59 tics left but the Cardinals made their free throws and Jay Brown had a key block in the paint to help preserve the lead. Jerome Tillman led the Bobcats with 25 points and six rebounds.
Ohio had been making a habit of strong second-half play, averaging 45 points this season, but was held to 35 on 37 percent shooting after halftime.
For the game Lamar shot 48 percent compared to 38 for Ohio and held a 40-27 rebounding edge. The Cardinals had 16 turnovers but just five in the second half.
Lamar led 36-32 at the half and did not trail after a Jay Brown jumper with 1:34 left in the first.
Lamar will play Indiana State (0-6) on Sunday evening. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. Eastern time. ISU fell to Louisville 83-43 in the early game Saturday.
