BEAUMONT - Texas State, who the Cardinals shut out Friday night, scored five runs in the third inning and cruised to an 8-1 win over Lamar University Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference baseball action at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Lamar dropped to 28-18 overall and 15-5 in SLC play. Texas State improved to 30-15 overall and 15-5 in SLC play. The Cardinals and Bobcats will play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. Texas-San Antonio, who won 8-6 Saturday at Sam Houston State, leads the SLC standings with a 16-4 mark.
Ben Theriot led off the third inning with a single to left field for the Bobcats. Thomas Field was hit by a pitch and Adam Witek singled to left field to load the bases with one out. David Wood delivered a 2-run single to center field. Paul Goldschmidt followed with a 3-run home run to left field, his first of the season, to give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead.
Texas State added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Casey Guest led off with a single to left field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by field. Adam Witek doubled to left field to drive in Guest and advanced to third on an error by Erik Kanaby in left field. Wood followed with a single up the middle to drive in Witek and push the lead to 7-0.
The Bobcats increased its lead to 8-0 with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Witek doubled to right center field. Wood was intentionally walked and Goldschmidt was hit by a pitch from reliever Matison Smith. Aaron Garza drove in Witek on a fielder's choice ground out.
Lamar finally got on the board in the home half of the sixth inning. The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out as Kanaby walked, Baker was hit by a pitch and Ambort drew a four-pitch walk. After Dan Hernandez flew out to shallow center field, Jeff Vickers walked to force in Kanaby with the Cardinals lone run.
Steven Siers (5-1) earned the win for the Bobcats. He pitched the first five and two-third innings, allowing one run on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Jason Baca pitched the last three and one-third innings for his second save of the season. He allowed no runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Lamar starter Brian Needham (5-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in two and two-third innings pitched. The Cardinals were held to five hits and just one extra base hit, which was a double by Ambort.
