Harrington, making his sixth start of the season, tossed his first complete-game of the season in improving his record to 3-2 on the season. He allowed one run on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in nine innings pitched. He retired the Mavericks in order in the second and sixth innings, and was helped by the Cardinals defense turning three double plays.
Lamar scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. Jeff Vickers was hit by a pitch from UTA starter Dillon Gee to lead off the inning. Brian Lloyd bunted into a fielder's choice and Wes Desmond reached on a two-out fielding error by Leo Radkowski at third base. Travis Dunson followed with an RBI single to right field to drive in Lloyd with the game's first run.
The Mavericks tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth inning. David Newby doubled down the right field line on a ball that took a bad hop and bounced over Michael Ambort's head at first base. Kyle Rudy singled up the middle to drive in Newby.
The Cardinals responded in the home half of the fifth inning. Dunson singled to left field, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by Erik Kanaby. Collin DeLome tripled to center field to drive in Dunson. Ambort singled sharply through the left side to drive in DeLome and give Lamar a 3-1 lead.
Lamar added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kanaby, who went 2-for-4 to extend his school-record hitting streak to 25 games, led off with an infield single and DeLome walked. Ambort sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Ryan Baker drove in Kanaby with a sacrifice fly to center field and extend the Cardinals' lead to 4-1.
