FRISCO, Texas - After helping the Lamar University women's basketball team to two crucial wins in Southland Conference East division play last week, senior guard LaToya Carson was voted Aeropostale Southland Conference Player of the Week.
Carson, a native of Long Beach, Miss., earns the honor for the first time in her career and becomes the second Lady Cardinal to win the award this season. She joins teammate Brittney Williams, who was voted Player of the Week on Jan. 15. For the first time since the 2000-01 season, LU has multiple Player of the Week selections, as Shawnta Vanzant was tabbed four times that season.
Carson helped the Lady Cardinals to a pair of SLC East victories last week, averaging 23.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while shooting .542 (13-24) from the field and .905 (19-21) from the free throw line.
In Thursday's 81-78 win over Central Arkansas, she posted a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, going 7-11 from the field and 9-9 from the free throw line. Then on Saturday, she scored 24 points and grabbed seven boards, while going 10-12 from the charity stripe in the team's 69-58 win over Northwestern State.
Carson is tied for ninth in the SLC in scoring and has moved to fifth place on the all-time scoring list in Lady Cardinal history. She currently has 1,281 points in her career, 89 points behind Barbara Hickey for fourth place.
Carson and the Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Thursday when they head to Corpus Christi, Texas for their first only meeting of the year with the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m.
