WACO, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team opened the 2006-07 season Friday at the opening round of the Baylor Fall Invitational.
The Lady Cards struggled in singles play, but had success in doubles play, winning three matches.
In the doubles green draw, Andrea Martinez paired with Maria Gutierrez for a 8-2 win over Kalei Gora and Natalie Avaya of Lee College, while Pamela Martinez and Majijee Ashrafi tok down Andrea House and Karolina Rowinski of Wyoming 8-2. In the doubles white draw the tandem of Tanya Roberts and Kaltina Harbuzi too out sara Pesic and Sofia Lafinova of UT-Arlington 8-4. The final Lady Card to play was Manimi Kuroda, who teamed with Sammi Gottich of Baylor. The duo was knocked off by Sarah Drummond and Sandra Vucic of Abilene Christian.
In singles play the Lady Cards collected two wins, with Martinez knocking off Paige Robinson of Lee College 6-0, 6-5 and Ashrafi taking out Elisa Leader of Lee 6-1, 6-1. Also advancing to the round of 16 was Kuroda who had a bye. All three Lady Cards to advance to the round of 16 were in the singles white draw.
In other action, Andrea Martinez was beaten 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (2) by Monica Purice of Oklahoma, while Harbuzi lost to Christi Bexley of OU, falling 6-2, 7-5 in the singles Gold Draw. In the singles green draw Roberts fell to Santie Delport of Tulsa 6-1, 6-3 and Pamela Martinez fell to Samantha Van der Drift of Texas Tech 6-1, 7-5.
