HOUSTON - Sophomore Collin Delome went 4-for-4 at the plate to take over the team batting lead, but Lamar University lost 11-2 at No. 1-ranked Rice University Wednesday night at Reckling Park in non-conference baseball action.
Lamar dropped to 31-19 overall and returns home to host Prairie View A&M Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Cardinals have lost five straight and seven of their last eight games. Rice improved to 40-9 overall, which marks the 12th straight season in which the Owls have won at least 40 games.
Rice scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Brian Friday led off the bottom of the first with a double down the right field line off Lamar starter William Delage. Josh Rodriguez drove in Friday's with the game's first run on a two-out single up the middle.
Tyler Henley was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Friday. Joe Savery drove in Henley with a two-out single to center field.
The Owls scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 4-0. Adam Zornes walked and scored on a single by Danny Lehmann. Greg Buchanan delivered a two-out RBI single to right field to drive in Lehmann.
Lamar broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Matt Lambeth led off the inning with a single to right field. Ryan Baker followed with a single to left field. Lambeth and Baker engineered a double steal with one out.
Erik Kanaby drove in Lambeth with a sacrifice fly to right field. Jo Jo Haney drove in Baker with an infield single to make the score 4-2.
Henley, who was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, led off the sixth inning with a double down the right field line for Rice. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Friday. Buchanan drove in Henley with a safety squeeze sacrifice bunt to put the Owls up 5-2.
Rice broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Henley had an RBI single through the right side of the infield and Buchanan delivered a 2-run single to right field. Savery belted a 2-run triple to the base of the wall in center field and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Colt Crawford to make the score 11-2.
Rice starter Will McDaniel (6-1) pitched five and one-third innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks in six strikeouts to pick up the win. Savery, who started the game at first base, pitched a scoreless ninth inning by striking out the side.
Delage (9-3), the first of six pitchers for the Cardinals, took the loss. He allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts in four and two-third innings. Allen Harrington pitched the final one and two-third innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth inning.
