ARLINGTON - Senior William Delage did a masterful job on the mound and Collin Delome homered twice as Lamar University shutout Texas-Arlington 7-0 Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference baseball action at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Lamar improved to 24-11 overall and 12-2 in SLC play. The Cardinals posted their ninth straight win in conference play to take over first place in the league standings. UTA dropped to 14-19 overall and 10-2 in SLC play. Lamar will go for the three-game sweep, its third straight, today at 1 p.m.
Delage (7-2) allowed no runs on six hits with three walks and nine strikeouts in eight and one-third innings pitched. Looking to earn his third complete-game and third shutout, Delage ran into a little trouble in the bottom of the ninth as the Mavericks put runners on first and second with one out.
Derrick Gordon came on to record the final two outs to end the game. Delage retired 10 straight batters during the middle innings. UTA loaded the bases with two outs in the second, but Daniel Rieder flied out to center field to end the inning.
C.J. Ebarb, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, put Lamar on the board first with a solo home run to straight away center field with one out in the top of the fourth inning. It was his sixth homer of the season.
The Cardinals added another run in the sixth inning. Dan Hernandez, who was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, led off the inning with a double to left center field. Ebarb drove in Hernandez with a double to left field to give Lamar a 2-0 lead.
Collin Delome, who was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, led off the top of the eighth inning with an opposite field, solo home run to left field, which was his seventh on the season. Hernandez followed with a solo home run to left center field, which was also his seventh homer of the season. That put the Cardinals up 4-0.
Lamar put the game out of reach with three runs in the top of the ninth inning. Colt Crawford doubled down the left field line with one out. Kanaby followed with an RBI double down the right field line. DeLome, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games, closed out the scoring with a 2-run home run to right center field, his second of the game and eighth of the season, to put the Cardinals up 7-0.
The Cardinals pounded out 15 hits, the sixth game they have recorded a double-figure hit total and 10th in the last 11 games. Nine of the 15 hits went for extra bases with five doubles and four home runs. Jo Jo Haney went 0-for-4 at the plate, which ended his 10-game hitting streak, and was the only starter in the lineup to not get at least one hit.
Dillon Gee (4-5) took the loss for the Mavericks, allowing four runs on 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Sophomore Allen Harrington, who is 2-1 with a 2.25 earned run average, is Lamar's probable starter today. Austin Bridges, who is 3-3 with a 4.22 ERA, is expected to start for UTA.
