HOUSTON - The Lamar University baseball team jumped out to a 3-1 lead over the University of Houston Tuesday night, but could not hold on for a win, as the Cougars scored one run in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings, handing the Cardinals a 4-3 loss at Cougar Field.
With one out, and the game tied at three in the bottom of the ninth, Houston got back-to-back singles from Isa Garcia and Dustin Kingsbury to set the table for the final run. When Brad Lincoln's shot up the first base line was mishandled by Lamar's Andrew Leal, Garcia was able to score from second base, giving UH the 4-3 win.
The Cards (10-7) put their first run on the board in the second inning on a single through the right side by Erik Kanaby, which drove in Jo Jo Haney who led off the inning with a walk. After a steal of second base by Kanaby, the Cardinals had runners at second and third with one out.
After a Matt Lambeth reached first on a fielders choice which saw Colt Crawford cut down at home, Collin DeLome tripled down the right field line to put LU up 3-0.
The Cougars answered in the bottom half of the second when Luis Flores knocked in Bryan Pounds who reached on a one-out walk. Flores advanced into scoring position on a balk and wild pitch by Justin Walker.
The Cougars tied the game by picking up one run in the sixth inning on a sac fly by Flores, which scored Kingsbury, and a run in the eighth on a RBI single by Matt Weston which knocked in Matt Farrington.
The Cardinals were led offensively by Kanaby who went three for four at the plate with an RBI and a stolen base, while DeLome finished with two RBI's.
Chuckie Platt took the loss for the Cardinals after giving up three hits in one inning of work. Justin Walker and Brian Needham each threw three innings for the Cards, each giving up three hits and one run, while Allen Harrington pitched one and one third innings, giving up one run and one hit.
The Cardinals will be in action again Friday at 6:30 p.m. when they take on the Southeastern Louisiana Lions in Hammond, La. in the Southland Conference opener for both teams.
