BEAUMONT - Senior Will Henderson went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in to lead Lamar University to an 11-8 win over Arkansas State Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Cardinal Classic at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Lamar evened its record to 6-6 on the season after posting a 2-1 record this weekend. The Cardinals defeated Michigan State 8-1 on Friday and lost 6-1 to Kentucky on Saturday. Lamar hosts the University of Houston Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Lamar plated two runs in the bottom of second inning. Will Henderson singled to right field and Ryan Baker followed with a single to right to put runners on the corners. Hernandez walked to load the bases. All three runners moved up a base, including Henderson scoring the game's first run on ASU pitcher Taylor Fowler's balk. Colt Crawford followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Baker.
The Cardinals added two more in the third inning to make the score 4-0. Kanaby walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher.
Matt Lambeth walked to put runners on the corners. C.J. Ebarb lined out to the pitcher, but Fowler's throw to third was wide of the bag to allow Kanaby to score. Collin Delome followed with an RBI single to right field.
In the fourth inning, Baker singled through the left side, moved to second on a ground out and advanced to third on a passed ball by catcher Drew Rogers. Andrew Gay drove in Baker with a single to center field to put the Cardinals up 5-0.
ASU (6-2) cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Guy Brown singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Tyler Doke walked and Elliot Jacobs drove in Brown with a single to right field. Michael Williams doubled down the left field line to drive in Jacobs to make the score 5-2.
Lambeth led off the home half of the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field. Will Henderson walked and stole second. Baker drove him in with a single to right field to extend Lamar's lead to 7-2. In the seventh, Ebarb walked to lead off the inning and Henderson followed with a towering 2-run home run that cleared the scoreboard in left center field to put Lamar up 9-2.
Brett Kinning, who was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, homered down the right field line in the top of the eighth inning off reliever Scott Meyer to make the score 9-3. Lamar answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Crawford doubled to left center and scored when Kanaby reached on an error by the first baseman. Lambeth walked and Ebarb singled to center to load the bases. Crawford scored on Henderson's fielder's choice ground out to make the score 11-3.
ASU took advantage of four Lamar errors in the top of the ninth inning that led to five unearned runs to make the final score 11-8. Williams, who was 2-for-5 with two RBI, had the only RBI in the inning with a single to center field that scored Doke.
Steve Macfarland (2-0) started and picked up the win for Lamar, allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in five innings pitched. Fowler (1-2) took the loss for the Indians, allowing seven runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
