BEAUMONT - The Lamar University baseball team jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead over the University of Texas-Pan American Saturday afternoon, and never looked back en route to a 6-1 series opening win at Vincent Beck Stadium.
The Cardinals got on the board in the second inning when Collin DeLome, who reached on a single to center field to start the inning, scored on a single to center field by Ryan Baker. Will Henderson then provided the big hit for Lamar, crushing a 1-2 pitch over the center field wall for a three-run home run to give the Cards a 4-0 lead.
The Broncos cut into the Lamar lead in the top of the sixth inning when Patrick Brooks led off the inning with a solo home run off of Allen Harrington.
The Cardinals answered the Broncos run in the bottom of the frame, putting up two runs on just one hit, a lead off single by DeLome. The Broncos helped the Cardinals cause with a botched double play with the bases loaded and one out.
The failure to turn the double play kept the bases loaded, and allowed another run to score when C. J. Ebard drew a four-pitch walk with two outs. The run would be the last of the game for either team, as the pitchers for both squads did not allow either offense to get anything going.
Steve McFarland picked up the win for Lamar, his first of the year, throwing five innings and allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out six Broncos. Harrington picked up his first save of the 2006 season, pitching the final four innings, giving up five hits and one earned run and striking out three.
DeLome was the offensive leader for the Cardinals, going three for four at the plate with two runs scored. Baker also pounded out two hits and an RBI for Lamar.
Ricky Ibarz took the loss for Pan American, giving up five earned runs in five innings while striking out five Cardinal batters.
The Cardinals and Broncos will be in action again Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Vincent Beck Stadium. The series will conclude on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m., admission is free for both games.
