BEAUMONT - The Lamar University men's tennis team opened the 2006 season on the road over the weekend, dropping matches to Prairie View A&M and Tulsa in Oklahoma.
The weekend stared with a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Prairie View A&M Panthers in Broken Arrow, Okla. The Cardinals swept doubles play with Filip Kanczula and Maciej Bogusz taking down Xavier Godoy and David Herrera 8-3. Jacob Eastwood and Evan Hayes matched the 8-3 win, triumphing over Nicolas Bateman and Jose Talavera, while Tyler Cobb and Brett Sticker took down Chris Scurry and Andy Narido 8-4.
In Singles action the Cardinals picked up wins from the number one spot with Kanczula taking down Talavera 6-4, 6-2, and the number three spot where Eastwood outlasted Narido 7-6 (3), 7-5.
The wins from the one and three spot were the only singles win the Cards could muster though, leaving them one short of the win. Bogusz fell to Bateman 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, Hayes lost 6-4, 6-3 to Herrera, Sticker fell to Godoy 7-6 (2), 6-2 and Cobb dropped his match 6-2, 6-0 to Scurry.
On Saturday the Cardinals took on number 46 Tulsa, who showed they are worthy of their top 50 ranking with a 7-0 win over Lamar. The doubles team of Aleksander Charpantidis and Ricardo Soriano dropped Bogusz and Kanczula 8-1, Diego Camacho and Ross Cunningham knocked off Eastwood and Hayes 8-3 and the tandem of Arnau Brugues and Andy Connelly took out Cobb and Sticker 8-1.
In singles action, the Cardinals hung tough in the top three spots against several nationally ranked opponents. Kanczula fell to Brugues 6-2, 6-2 in number one singles, Bogusz fell to No. 39 Soriano 6-3, 7-5 at the number two spot and Eastwood fell 6-4, 6-2 to No. 73 Camacho.
In the four through six spots the Golden Wave swarmed Lamar, dropping no games. Hayes fell 6-0, 6-0 to Fredrico Soriano in the number four slot, Wesley Arnold was downed 6-0, 6-0 by Cunningham, and Sticker fell 6-0, 6-0 to Connelly in the sixth spot.
The Cardinals will be in action again this weekend, as they travel to Little Rock, Arkansas for three matches. On Friday they will take on Arkansas-Little Rock, and on Saturday they will take on Grambling State and Indiana State.
