BEAUMONT - Junior Brandon Chappell scored a career-high 18 points, but it wasn't enough as Lamar dropped its final tune-up game for conference play with Friday's 82-73 loss to visiting Delta State at the Montagne Center.
Lamar dropped to 7-6 overall and Delta State improved to 8-1 on the season. The Cardinals return to action Wednesday when McNeese State visits the Montagne Center for the start of Southland Conference play.
A Josh Goodwin layup gave the Cardinals a three-point lead, 50-47, at 15:08. Delta State responded with a 13-0 run to take a 60-50 lead. Jeremy Richardson hit consecutive three-pointers for the Statesmen and Karl Nickerson capped the run with a three-pointer at 12:40.
Lamar scratched its way back into the game, using a 10-1 run of its own to pull with one, 63-62. Matthew Barrow and Nashid Beard each hit a pair of free throws, Alan Daniels nailed a pair of jumpers and Beard capped the rally with a jumper in the lane at 8:48.
DSU's Jasper Johnson took the game into his own hands, scoring seven straight points to extend the Statesmen's lead to 72-63. Johnson hit a three-pointer, a 15-foot jumper and a layup. Colby Harris capped a 9-1 run with a tip-in at 5:28.
Chappell's three-pointer at 3:52 pulled Lamar within four, 72-68, but Richardson converted a conventional three point play to push the lead back to seven, 75-68, at 3:39. That ignited another 9-0 run that was capped by a Richardson jumper at 1:18 that gave the Statesmen their biggest lead of the game at 13 points, 81-68.
Daniels led Lamar with 23 points on 9-of-23 shooting from the field, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range, and 4-of-8 from the free throw line. It marked the 10th time in 13 games that Daniels has scored 20 or more points in a game.
Chappell was 6-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range, in scoring his 18 points. He also dished out six assists. Beard added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field.
Lamar shot 45.6 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from 3-point range and 48.1 percent from the free throw line. The Cardinals forced 21 turnovers, but committed 18 which led to a 24 to 14 advantage for the Statesmen in points off turnovers.
Johnson recorded a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead Delta State. He was 11-of-19 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Richardson added 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field and was 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
Delta State shot 46.9 percent from the field, a blistering 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from 3-point range and 60.9 percent from the free throw line. The Statesmen outrebounded Lamar 48 to 32.
