NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Lamar University junior
Anthony Oliver smashed his own hammer throw school record to repeat as a Southland individual champion while
Ashton Rainey collected all-conference honors with a third-place finish in the women's 10,000 on day one of the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday at Stephen F. Austin. With six top-10 finishes on the day between the teams, the men are currently second with 11 points while the women are tied for fifth with 12.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi leads the men's overall standings while the East Texas A&M women's team hold the top spot entering Friday. Both schools sit atop the leaderboard with 26 points.
Oliver bested his previous record by seven feet when, on his second throw, he recorded a mark of 63.69m (208-11). This made him the overall leader, which he would never concede, as he added an inch on his final attempt to claim the title at 63.70m (209-00).
Rainey compiled a time of 36:05.96 to finish 10 seconds ahead of fourth place. This was the second-straight season the junior from Ocean Spring, Miss. medaled in this event after placing second a year ago.
Through four events in the heptathlon,
Mariam Buenanueva Saleme leads the field with 3,413 points, which is ahead of SFA's Basia Mitchell. The Argentinian won the 100-meter hurdles (13.69), was second in both the 200m (24.42) and the high jump (1.64m/5-4.4) and placed fourth in the shot put (12.08m/39-7.5).
The 400-meter hurdle prelims saw five Big Red athletes qualify for the finals, which will take place Saturday.
Davis Wenthe (50.77) and
Ethan Ellis (51.22) placed first and third, respectively, in the men's circuit. For the women,
Krystan Bright (1:00.58),
Kayla Smith (1:00.68) and
Aryssa Rodriguez (1:01.14) crossed the line second, third and sixth, respectively.
Day two of this meet will commence Friday at 9:30 a.m. as Buenanueva Saleme will try to finish strong in the heptathlon.
Kenson Tate will open the field events in the men's long jump at 12:30 p.m. while Bright, Rodriguez and
Amber Simpson begin the running events at 5 p.m.. in the women's 100-meter hurdles.
