Schiel's Record Javelin Throw Earns Southland Field Athlete of the Week Nod

| By:
FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University senior Neelie Schiel has been named the Southland Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week after breaking her own school record in the javelin at the J. Fred Duckett/Rice Twilight Meet. This is Schiel's first career weekly award.

On her first attempt, Schiel established the new mark of 47.25m while becoming the first Cardinal to throw the javelin 155 feet. The Chappell Hill native earned fourth in the event and bested her previous mark of 46.95m (154-11) at last season's conference championship meet, which also earned her the conference title.

Schiel currently ranks in the top 100 female javelin throwers across all of the NCAA Division I (91st) but also sits 15th in the NCAA South Central Region and third in the conference.

She becomes the third Cardinal this season to receive the conference's field athlete of the week award, along with Anthony Oliver (Apr. 8th) and Mariam Buenanueva Saleme (Apr. 15th).

The Cardinals are heading to College Station to compete in Texas A&M's Alumni Muster for the penultimate meet before the SLC Championships. This will be a two-day event beginning Friday at 10 a.m. with the discus events.
