Cardinals Drop Heartbreaker

| By:
Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University fell to 0-2 in Southland Conference play Monday afternoon dropping a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Southeastern Louisiana at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.

The singles competition saw three matches go to a third set with two sets having outcomes recorded in a tiebreak, but unfortunately, the match came down to doubles play.

A hotly contest pairing on all three courts with all three matches coming down to the bitter end. After the first two courts were split with SLU taking court 1 and Lamar opening the day with a victory on court 2, the decision for the doubles point came down to line three. Unfortunately, the match was decided in the 12th game when SLU's Mariam Tetradze and Adriana Tirado defeated Lamar's Lera Zaginayko and Martin Alcaino, 7-5.

The doubles point would prove to be decisive as Big Red and the Lions split the six singles matches. Lamar took the top three matches on the ladder with Southeastern winning on courts 4 – 6, with No. 6 singles being the overall match winner.

Lamar took two of the three marathon matches grabbing three-set victories at Nos. 1 (Arina Gudovskaya) and 3 (Asta Miettinen) singles. Lamar's other win came at No. 2 singles from Luana Paiva.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on UIW. The match against the league's other Cardinals will begin at 1 p.m.
