Cardinals Defeat St. Mary’s

| By:
Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Lamar University has battled the elements on what was originally scheduled to be a three-day road swing but after a cancellation Monday at Texas State, the Cardinals closed out the stretch with a 1-1 record by defeating NCAA Division II powerhouse St. Mary's, 5-2, Wednesday in San Antonio.

The Cardinals (7-6/.538) overwhelmed a traditional DII top-25 program by applying pressure early and never letting up. The team of Lera Zaginayko and Martina Alcaino posted a 6-3 decision over Breeze Simon and Sarah Wooten on court 3. As if following a similar script, LU's Asta Miettinen and Eva Gumenyuk posted a similar 6-3 score against the Rattlers' Selina Wu and Isabella Olsson.

Things didn't change when the two teams transitioned to singles. While the Rattlers managed to get on the scoreboard, Lamar overwhelmed their hosts with wins at Nos. 3-6 singles. Miettinen defeated Olson, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles followed by Alcaino's 7-5, 6-1, victory over Gia Posito at No. 4.

The Cardinals' other two singles wins came from Zaginayko (No. 5) over Wooten, 6-3, 6-1, and Savannah Bijlsma's 6-1, 6-2, victory over Simon at No. 6 singles.

The Cardinals return to Southland Conference play Saturday, Mar. 21, when they travel to New Orleans, La., to take on the Privateers. The match against UNO will begin at 1 p.m. from the Big Easy.
