ARLINGTON, TEXAS – Lamar University rolled in Arlington, Texas and picked up a 5-2 victory over UT Arlington Sunday afternoon. It marks the first program win for the Cardinals at UT Arlington in series history and first win overall since the 2014 campaign.
Sunday's win ended an eight-match slide to the Mavericks. It was a hotly contested match that had one doubles court go to a tiebreaker and four singles matches got to a third set.
With the doubles courts split at one win each, the Cardinals muscled up to take the point with a thrilling tiebreak decision at No. 1 doubles. The LU duo of
Maxwell Lindstedt and
Leon Nickel outsted UTA's Yazid Lahjomri and Ellison Minnaar, 7-6 (7-3).
The Cardinals carried that momentum into singles play. Big Red stepped on the accelerator at Nos. 4 and 5 singles. Freshman
Vicente Monge got it started with a straight-sets victory at No. 4 singles followed by sophomore
Louis Drapeau on court five. Drapeau was the first of the three-set matches to end. He gave Lamar a 3-0 lead with a his 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, decision over Novak Ivanovic.
The Mavericks attempted a late comeback with a victory on court 2 but Lamar did not allow the rally to continue picking up the decisive point from freshman
Rintaro Shukuda at the No. 3 position (4-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Finbar McGarvey).
The Red and White will return to action Saturday, Mar. 7, when they travel to West Point, N.Y. to take on Hofstra (11 a.m.).
