BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University will be making a trip out west to Albuquerque, N.M. to compete in the University of New Mexico's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational. This will be a two-day meet beginning Friday, January 23rd.
The Cardinals began their season two weeks ago at Houston's Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational. There, they collected 14 top-five finishes, including one individual champion in freshman
Bryson Champagne, who won his 400-meter debut with a time of 49.97.
Jonathan Rivera (8:15.63) was one of four runners to break the meet's 3,000m record and claimed second.
John Sanderson (8.00) and
Kyndall Drones (13.42m/44-0.5) would each break school records in the 60m hurdles and shot put, respectively.
Last weekend, LU sent its throwers to the McNeese Indoor No. 1 event and recorded nine top-five finishes. Drones earned a pair of seconds in both the weight throw (16.33m/53-7) and the shot put, setting a new school record with a throw of 13.54m (44-5.25).
Alex Williams III clinched the men's weight throw title with his throw of 17.39m (57-1.0).
The Cardinals will be one of 21 schools competing along with UNM, Adams State, Arizona, California, Central Washington, CSU-Pueblo, Eastern New Mexico, Fort Lewis, Georgia, Grand Canyon, Guelph, Iowa, New Mexico Highlands, San Diego State, SMU, South Carolina, Southeastern, Stanford, Utah State and UCLA.
The meet will start Friday at 3:00 p.m., with the field events while the track portion takes place an hour later. The second day will commence at 10 a.m.
