HOUSTON, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team made the short trip down Interstate 10 to face Rice Sunday afternoon. It was a tough start to the season for the Cardinals dropping a 7-0 decision to the Owls Sunday afternoon at the Goerge R. Brown Tennis Center.
 
The Owls took an early lead with victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles halting the match at line 1. As the two teams made the transition to singles, the Owls managed to hold their momentum from doubles. Rice's Fernanda Martinez made it a 2-0 lead with her victory on court 5.
 
The Owls followed that up with victories at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to lock up the overall victory. Rice closed out the match by taking the final two singles contests for the final score.
 
Lamar returns to action Friday when they travel to Huntsville, Texas to take on former Southland foe Sam Houston. The match against the Bearkats will begin at 11 a.m.
