CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Mother Nature impacted the opening day of the Lamar University fall tennis season forcing two long delays before competition could get going in full swing. Despite the weather delays, LU walked away with three singles wins advancing three different individuals to the semifinals with several players yet to take the court due to the weather.
Junior
Leon Nickel got things start for Big Red with his straight-sets victory over UT Rio Grande Valley's Ivo Isqueiro, 6-2, 6-0. Classmate
Stefano Chappuis followed suit with his super tiebreak decision over Lubbock Christian's Andres De Los Rios Kolejewska. After dropping the first set (6-3), Chappuis battled back to take the next two, 7-5, 10-6.
Newcomer
Maxwell Lindstedt also advanced to the semifinals in the tournament's purple bracket. Lindstedt was efficient in knocking off LCU's Jordan Georgiev, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
It was a bit of different story for the Cardinals' doubles teams. LU started the day strong behind the teams of
Fabian Anthin and Nickel and
Louis Drapeau and
Lukas Hamacher building late leads in two very close matches. Nickel and Anthin were tied 5-5, but up 30-0 in the 11
th game but Abilene Christian's Alejandro Verdasco and Ethan Scribner battled back to force a tiebreak, winning the match, 7-6 (11-9). It was an eerily similar situation for the Drapeau and Hamacher who fell late to Lubbock Christian's Kolwejewska and Georgiev, 7-6 (7-3).
The Cardinals will be back in action for the second day of action beginning at 9 a.m.
