BEAUMONT, Texas - Former soccer All-American Esther Okoronkwo (2018-20) is making a name for herself on the international stage as she helped the Nigeria Super Falcons to a 3-2 comeback victory over host nation Morocco in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations title match. This was the 10th championship all-time for the nation.
Trailing 2-0 in the second half, Okoronkwo ignited the rally by first scoring a penalty kick goal in the 64th minute before dishing out a pair of assists on the tying and winning goals in the 71st and 88th minutes, respectively. Her performance would help her achieve woman of the match honors. Throughout the competition, she totaled one goal and six assists, which also made her a member of the Best XI of the Tournament team.
Okoronkwo has spent her soccer career playing in France, Spain, and China before joining AFC Toronto of the Northern Super League, a top division in Canada. In just her third game with the club, she scored both goals to claim a 2-1 win over Calgary Wild FC, which marked the first victory in club history. To this point, she has totaled 13 goals in 47 appearances on the club circuit and nine goals in 23 appearances for her home country.
Originally from Abia State, Nigeria, she grew up in Richmond and spent her final two collegiate seasons with Big Red. Okoronkwo accumulated numerous awards, including two first-team All-Southland Conference honors, SLC Player, Forward and Newcomer of the Year, while leading the Cardinals to the 2019 conference title, in which she was named tournament MVP. Okoronkwo holds the school record for goals (35) and game-winning goals (13), while she is second in points (86).
