BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team bolstered its lineup with the additions of Eva Gumenyuk (Moscow, Russia), Varvara Popadina (Moscow, Russia) and Lera Zaginayko (Beit Yanai, Israel) announced head coach
David Wong Wednesday morning.
"I could not be more excited to announce these three signees," said Wong. "All three bring a high-skill level to our program and will make and immediate impact on our squad. The best thing about this group is that they each bring different skill sets to our roster that I'm excited to watch play out over the next four years."
One of the top junior doubles players from Russia, Gumenyuk makes her way to Beaumont having won the Moscow Championship in mixed doubles. A two-time finalist at the ITF J30 and J60 doubles, Gumenyuk has won multiple juniors and adult titles in Moscow.
A native of Beit Yanai, Israel, Zaginayko was ranked as high as 11
th nationally in Israel in juniors (age 18). She continued her upward climb in the national rankings climbing as high as 41
st among adults. A doubles finalist in the Israeli Youth Championship, Zaginayko has twice advanced to the semifinals of the ITF J30 championships. During her career she has won several tournament titles in Israel, and advanced to the finals in numerous others, as both a junior and adult.
Similar to Gumenyuk, Popadina also makes her way to the Golden Triangle from Moscow. Having played in several international tournaments during her career, Popadina has medaled in several tournaments in Russia.
