AZUSA, Calif. -
Ashton Rainey and
Freddy Richardson placed in the top five of their respective events on the second day of the Bryan Clay Invitational for Lamar University. Four of the five Cardinals that competed Thursday set times that placed them in the program's top 10 record books.
Competing in the first heat of the women's 5000m Open B event, Rainey crossed the line in second place at 16:42.76, which was the fastest of all collegiate athletes and only trailed an unaffiliated runner by a little over four seconds. This was initially the third-best mark of the event until later, when
Cara Inch (20th) ran the Open A circuit and finished at 16:38.29.
Richardson placed fourth in the men's 5,000 Open A event crossing the line at 13:44.82, which was four seconds outside first and one second behind TCU's Johnson Lagat for a top-three finish. Richardson's time is also the third fastest mark, which trails Sam Stabler (13:30.50; 2015) and Samuel Kosgei (13:35.75). Ironically, these times are also ranked in the top three in the Southland Conference. In the men's 800m,
Luke Parker (64th) clocked in at 1:50.63, which has him ranked fourth all-time.
Richardson, Rainey, and Inch will resume their time in Azusa Friday in the 1,500m along with
Annabel Hobday,
Inca Padfield, and
Emma Powell.
