Arina Gudovskaya and
Luana Paiva (No. 2) to win the doubles point and never looked back in a dominating performance over New Orleans, 5-2, Saturday afternoon. The victory moves Big Red to 4-17 on the season and 1-7 in Southland Conference play.
Do and Miettinen took their doubles' match with little resistance from the Privateers top duo, but the other two courts came right down to the wire as both were headed to a tiebreak. Gudovskaya and Paiva secured the point with a 7-6 (7-5) decision over New Orleans' Fleur Sprengers and Nouray Khaled. Even if the Cardinals dropped the match on court 2, LU's team of
Savannah Bijlsma and
Martina Alcaino were tied up in the tiebreaker, 6-6 (3-3).
UNO managed to tie the match momentarily with a singles victory at No. 3 singles, only to see Gudovskaya restore order with a 6-3, 6-4, decision over UNO's Anastassia Kouchnareva at No. 1 singles. Paiva put the Cardinals on the doorstep of the overall victory with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Khaled at No. 4.
With the matches on courts 2 and 6 headed to a third set, the Cardinals looked to secure the match early with Bijlsma on court 5. The Netherlands native came through in a big way knocking off Ananya Dhankhar, 6-4, 7-5.
With the overall team win locked up the Cardinals split the last two singles matches for the final score. Big Red will look the close the regular season with consecutive wins as they host Nicholls Monday for Senior Day. The match against the Colonels is set to begin at 11 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center. Lamar will honor its 2025 senior class at 10:30 a.m. before the match starts.
