AUSTIN, Texas -
Kayli Johnson became Lamar University's fourth individual Texas Relays champion after winning the long jump event on the second day of the event. It is Johnson's second win in the long jump for the track and field season. The Cardinals also had four top five finishes for the day.
Johnson started her event by posting 5.63 meters (18'5.75") in her first attempt. That distance was the furthest through two attempts until Sacramento State's Tamia Ramos (5.81m-19'0.75") grabbed the lead in the third round. On her fifth jump, Johnson lept for 5.82m (19'1.25"), which would be enough to claim the title.
Another athlete who finished in the top five was
Elijah Jackson. Competing in his hometown, Jackson earned fourth in the men's high jump with 2.12m (6'11.5"). After successfully clearing 2.02m (6'7.5") on his first attempt, he needed three jumps each to complete heights of 2.07m (6'9.5") and 2.12m.
Meanwhile, other LU athletes who weren't participating in the Texas Relays competed in the Victor Lopez Invitational hosted by Rice University.
Alex Williams III placed fifth in the hammer throw with 54.79m (179'9"), which is the second furthest mark thrown in his career.
The Cardinals will conclude their meets Saturday as the Texas Relays will resume at 10:00 a.m. while the Victor Lopez Invitational's second day commences at noon.
