Freddy Richardson (men's 1,500m),
Ashton Rainey (women's 10,000m) and
Lloyd Sheppard-Brown (men's 10,000m) each captured first place in their events as Lamar University began its time at the Texas Relays Thursday. On the day, the Cardinals posted seven top-five finishes with three firsts, one second, one third, and two fourths
Richardson posted a time of 3:45.58, beating Houston Christian's Edouard Lecrivain (3:46.59) by a full second. Sitting in seventh place after 700m, Richardson slowly worked his way up to fourth with only one lap to go. He was the only athlete to break 58 seconds in the final lap to secure victory.
For 8,400m in her race, Rainey went toe-to-toe with an unaffiliated runner for the top spot. Over the final four laps, she built a 20-second lead and crossed the line at 35:34.79, which shattered her previous mark by nearly seven minutes. Moments later, Sheppard-Brown (30:02.85), in his first outdoor meet, was within two seconds of breaking the 30-minute mark to claim first place. He took the lead after 4,400m and never looked back.
In the women's javelin throw,
Neelie Schiel (2nd) and
Cecile Bogliolo (4th) each placed in the top five. Schiel's furthest launch landed at 42.33m (138'10"), which was second to Oklahoma's Kassidy Sani while Bogliolo threw hers at 41.89m (135'5").
Annabel Hobday (4:26.64) ran fourth in the women's 1,500m as she missed out on medaling Making her season debut in track and field,
Nia Clatworthy ran in the women's 5,000m and claimed third with a time of 16:05.79.
Friday will have the Cardinals competing in two meets. Those in Austin will resume the Texas Relays at 9 a.m. while the others start the Victor Lopez Invitational at Rice University at 9:30 a.m.
