BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University women's basketball players
Akasha Davis and
Sabria Dean were each honored as members of the 2024-25 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's Basketball team for their work in the classroom. This is the second career honor for Davis and the first for Dean.
This honor is handed out to student-athletes in all four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA, for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. To qualify for the Academic All-District and All-American teams, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50, and must have competed in at least 90% of the team's competitions.
Last season, Davis (Wylie, Texas), a public health administration major with a 3.72 GPA, started all 30 games for LU and averaged 13.8 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Among her 399 points for the season were three 21-point games. She would score her 1,500th career point and also have 1,000 rebounds, becoming the first Cardinal to be the 1,500-point/1,000-rebound club. Davis broke the school's all-time rebounding record with 1,079. A Southland Conference first-team member for the third straight season, Davis also made the conference's all-tournament team.
A fellow SLC first-team member, Dean (Mineola, Texas), who graduated with an undergraduate degree in psychology in May 2023, earned a 3.58 GPA as a graduate student in social work. She started in 29 of LU's 30 games, which set new school records in games played (145) and starts (135). Dean ended her career as LU's second all-time leading scorer with 1,774 points and was also the second player in program history to record 1,500 points, 300 assists, and 200 steals. She finished the season with 413 points including 29 against Stephen F. Austin (2/1/25).
The Cardinals finished last season with a record of 22-8 overall and were second in the conference at 17-3. Their season ended in the semifinals of the SLC tournament.
