Big Red Sets Sights on Howie Ryan Invitational

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University is set to return to the Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston Friday for its penultimate meet of the indoor season before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships. This time, the Cardinals are taking part in the Howie Ryan Invitational.

In their last meet at the Robert Platt Invitational, the Cardinals collected 11 top-three finishes, including four firsts. Two of those firsts came from Kayli Johnson, who won both the women's triple jump (12.57m-41'3.0") and the women's long jump events (5.77m-18'11.25") while taking third in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles (8.45). LU swept the men's and women's mile events with Annabel Hobday (4:49.65) edging out teammate Cara Inch (4:50.65) and Freddy Richardson (4:03.55) crossing the line by a half-second over second place.

Kenson Tate claimed second in the men's long jump (7.64m-25'0.75"), while Mariam Buenanueva Saleme scored 3,661 points in the pentathlon for her second-place finish. The third placers for the Cardinals were Elijah Jackson in the high jump (2.10m-6'10.75"), Luke Parker in the men's 800m (1:52.37), and the women's 4x400m "A" team of Kayla Smith, Hannah Roberts, Mikalette Thompson, and Chantell Bowman (3:52.29).

The meet will be a one-day event and will start at 11:00 a.m. with the field events. The track portion will begin at 1:30 p.m.

LU will be among nine teams in this meet alongside Houston, Houston Christian, UIW, UL Monroe, Rice, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and UT-San Antonio.
