HAMMOND, La. – Lamar University was dominant in its tournament opener at Southeastern Louisiana late Friday evening. Through two matches in the 2025 fall season finale, the Cardinals are 1-1.
The Cardinals opened the tournament strong Friday evening with an impressive 4-1 over Dillard. Big Red took the doubles match – a straight-sets victory from
Martina Alcaino and
Lera Zaginayko – then made the transition to singles where
Asta Miettinen,
Luana Paiva and
Savannah Bijlsma each recorded straight set victories, including three shutout sets.
Unfortunately, the script was flipped on Lamar in the second match of the tournament. The Cardinals squared off against tournament host Southeastern Louisiana and it was the Lady Lions who jumped out to a quick start. SLU scored the point in doubles play and then took the first singles match before
Luana Paiva got the Red and White on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Paige Duncan, but Big Red couldn't build on the momentum dropping the final two matches.
Lamar closes out the fall season Sunday against Louisiana Christian. The match is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
