Lamar Mourns Passing of Gridiron Great

| By:
GALVESTON, Texas – Spergon Wynn, Jr., – a 1976 Cardinal Hall of Honor inductee – passed away earlier this month in Galveston. Wynn was a four-year letterman for Lamar who played for the Cardinals from 1964 to 1967.

Wynn came to Lamar as a non-scholarship player and worked his way up to being considered one of the greatest offensive linemen in program history. A collegiate playing career that began by Wynn simply asking for a tryout ended with All-America honors in 1967.

A two-time All-Southland Conference selection, Wynn was considered the best pulling guard to ever walk the halls of Lamar University. He was named the program's best offensive lineman in 1967 and would eventually be named to the Southland's first All-Decade Team in 1973.

Wynn, who was a four-year starter, helped guide the Red and White to one of their most dominant runs in program history as the Cardinals won three consecutive Southland Conference titles (from 1964-66).

Following his graduation from Lamar, Wynn went on to receive his law degree from Texas Southern, where his career took him to New York before moving back to the Galveston area. Wynn's son, Spergon Wynn III also played football in the SLC before going to play professionally in both the NFL and CFL.
