HOUSTON, Texas -
Freddy Richardson shattered his meet record in the men's 3,000-meters as Lamar University opened the 2025 indoor season at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational Friday hosted by the University of Houston. The Cardinals finished the meet with one gold, four silvers, and 12 top fives.
A year ago, Richardson had set the previous meet record at 8:25.07. Richardson (8:08.24) destroyed his previous best by 17 seconds. In the same race,
Lloyd Sheppard-Brown, making his Cardinal debut, was 11 seconds behind Richardson to place second at 8:19.42.

Kenson Tate and
Kayli Johnson each took second in the long jump. On his sixth jump, Tate leapt 7.53m (24'8.5")Â but was the furthest collegiate athlete as the winner was unaffiliated. Johnson would land her furthest jump at 5.87m (19'3.25").
At the start of the day,
Elijah Jackson received LU's first medal in the high jump at 2.05m (6'8.75"), which trailed first place by two feet.
Hannah Roberts (58.42) came within .04 seconds finishing third while
Ethan Ellis (600 yards-1:15.42),
Luke Parker (mile-4:18.95), and
Alex Williams III (16.71m-54'10") all took fourth in their respective events.
The Cardinals will return to Houston in three weeks as they will run in the Robert Platt Invitational.
