Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's soccer team met up with UT Rio Grande Valley for the first-ever Southland Conference game played between the two squads. Both sides combined for 31 shots and had chances late to score the winner, but neither would find the back of the net as the game ended up in a scoreless draw.
The Cardinals fired 15 shots with four on goal. Five of those 15 shots came from
Kamryn Harvey while
Isela Ramirez and
Rafiatu Alhassan each recorded two shots. Goalkeeper
Maddie Rich tied a career high with seven saves on 16 shots faced. Big Red added seven corner opportunities to the Vaqueros' five throughout the match.
The Cardinals outshot UTRGV 7-5 in the first half, including three on goal. Early on, Rich held off the only first-half shot on goal by Vaqueros in the 10th minute. LU's best chance to break through early came in the 21st minute when they had three shots in 13 seconds.
The second half was more of the same but with one difference. UTRGV outshot the Cardinals 11-8 with six of the seven shots on goal. While LU held a 4-3 shots advantage in the first 35 minutes of the half, the Vaqueros turned up the pressure over the final 10 minutes by firing eight of the last 12 shots. The Cardinals had their chance to score three times in the 85th minute, but with three minutes left, UTRGV had five shots to score, including three in 10 seconds. Rich and the defense came through to stop the shots and kept this contest scoreless at the final whistle.
The Cardinals remain at home for their next contest against Nicholls Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
