FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University senior pitcher
Jacob Ellis has been named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week announced league officials Monday afternoon. He has also been recognized as D1Baseball Pitcher of the Week for his efforts in Saturday's combined no-hitter.
The Edmond, Okla., native becomes the fourth Cardinal to receive SLC player of the week honors this season and the third pitcher, and the first to receive D1Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors.
Ellis received the honor for his efforts in Lamar's combined no-hitter Saturday against McNeese. The Cardinals combined no-hitter was unique from the standpoint that Lamar walked it off if in extra innings. Despite the extra-inning affair, Ellis still pitched a full nine-inning game with the lone blemish on his line being a seventh-inning walk.
Ellis also set a new season high with nine strikeouts in the contest, as LU took the series from McNeese over the weekend to remain in first place of the league standings.
A preseason all-conference selection, Ellis is 5-0 on the year with a 3.13 earned run average through 46.0 innings pitched. He has struck out 37 batters and is holding opponents to a team-best (among starters) .183 batting average.
The Cardinals will return to action Wednesday when they host Stephen F. Austin at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The game against the Lumberjacks will begin at noon and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
