BEAUMONT, Texas – Less than 24 hours after landing in the College Baseball Nation Top 25 poll, Lamar University baseball (29-6/8-1 Southland) finds itself ranked in two other top 25 polls. The Cardinals enter the week ranked 24
th in the Baseball America Top 25 Poll and 25
th in the Perfect Game Poll.
The Cardinals are one of just three schools from the state of Texas ranked in the poll (Texas A&M and Dallas Baptist) and the lone Southland Conference school represented.
For the Baseball America poll, Lamar makes its first appearance in the poll since the final poll of the 1995 season.
Big Red has found its way into the national rankings after having won 23 of its last 25 games – a stretch that includes a 13-game win streak (which was the nation's longest before being snapped) and a three-game sweep at No. 25 Oklahoma.
The Cardinals currently sit atop the Southland Conference with an 8-1 (.889) overall record and have made Vincent-Beck Stadium nearly impossible for visiting teams to win. The Cardinals have posted a 17-2 (.895) record at home this season.
Off to its best start since 1979, Lamar is riding the back of the strongest pitching staff in the Southland Conference, and one of the tops in the nation. The Cardinals lead the league and are ranked third nationally in earned run average (3.27), third in WHIP (1.14), fourth nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (6.80), tied for eighth nationally in shutouts and 22
nd nationally in walks per nine innings.
As a team, Lamar's .829 winning percentage ranks tied for seventh nationally and Big Red is ranked 21
st nationally in fielding percentage (.979).
The Cardinals return to action Friday when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to take on the Islanders. First pitch for game one is slated for 6 p.m.
