Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Lamar University kicked off a crucial three-match stretch over the course of the next four days, beginning Thursday at rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Lamar carried the fight to the Islanders rallying for the 4-3 victory at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The victory marked the first time Big Red has taken down A&M-Corpus Christi on the road. The Cardinals are now 8-11 (. 421) on the season and 1-2 (.333) in Southland Conference play.
The Islanders took the first lead of the day winning two of the three doubles matches to claim a 1-0 lead. LU regrouped during the transition to singles and stole the momentum away from their hosts. Lamar took victories in the first set on four of the six singles courts.
It was senior
Brandon Do who evened things up with his straight-sets victory on court 4 over Iannis Fernandes, 6-1, 6-2. With the overall match tied at 1, junior
Max Amling handed the Cardinals their second win of the day with his 6-4, 6-2 decision over Etienne Marty at No. 2 singles.
A&M-Corpus Christi responded with the next victory off the court to tie the match at 2 which began a back-and-forth finish to the day. After tying things back up at 2, the Cardinals'
Haruki Omori-Cowie had an answer taking down Nicolas Trebuchet in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Unfortunately, the Islanders would respond again with a three-set victory at No. 1 singles to tie the match up at 3 placing all the focus on the lone remaining court – No. 5 singles which was also headed to a third set.
Sophomore
Joan Crespo had to battle back from an early hole to Antoine Vicaire. After Crespo dropped the first set, 6-4, he responded with a 6-3 decision in the second forcing a third set. The third set came right down to the wire and was pushed to a tiebreak. In the extra frame, Crespo seized advantage and never looked back putting Vicaire away, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6-2).
Lamar has no time to celebrate Thursday's win because now they must return home to host Creighton. The 2 p.m. match will serve as the team's final non-conference contest of the 2024 season.
