SB Central: Cardinals Ride Hot Streak into Series Against Quakers

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University softball is riding high after their sixth straight victory as they get ready to square off against Penn in a three-game series this weekend at the LU Softball Complex. The first two games will be on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. with the series finale coming on Sunday at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Cardinals defeated Southern 6-2 in their midweek matchup on Wednesday in a game that featured numerous reviews and a peculiar play at third base in the sixth inning which stalled play for about fifteen minutes. Trinity Brandon continued her hot streak of late with a two-RBI single while Sabrina Jolin went the distance on the mound to pick up the win.

KEY STORYLINES
LU has won six straight games, their longest win streak since 2018 and their longest with head coach Amy Hooks at the helm. Having improved their win total each of the last three seasons, the team hopes to use this momentum as they gear up for conference play starting next weekend.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Tucker has gotten off to a tremendous start on the basepaths as she currently leads the conference in steals with 12 and sits tied for fourth nationally. She also leads the team in batting average at .438 to go along with three doubles and five RBI. Jayne Sepulveda leads the team in RBI with 13 while Brandon holds the top mark in OPS at 1.069.

On the mound – or off the mound in this case – Karyana Mitchell celebrated her SLC pitcher of the week honor by taking her first at-bat of the season on Tuesday and reaching base on a bunt. She would come around to score on an RBI groundout from Mikaila Kenney.

OPPONENT INFO: Penn
Time: Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m., Sunday at 1 p.m.

Penn is off to a 1-4 start this season after opening their season with the Liberty Classic last weekend. This is their first season with head coach Christie Novatin at the helm after finishing 8-43 last season. Katie Reagan is off to a hot start for the Quakers hitting 7-for-11 with two doubles and a triple while Delaney Smith and Julia Mortimer are key contributors who return from last year's team.
