BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team continues it season long six-match road swing Friday when they will hit the next two stops along the map beginning with Huntsville, Texas Friday and rematch with an old Southland Conference foe before traveling to Hattiesburg, Miss., Sunday to face Southern Mississippi.
The Cardinals are 4-3 (.571) on the season but have split their last four outings sweeping a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M before falling at Stephen F. Austin – by single point – and to Texas State. Against both the Ladyjacks and Bobcats Lamar had its opportunities to pull out victories.
The Bearkats enter the weekend with a 3-3 (.500) overall record and have dropped their last three matches after opening the year with three-straight wins, but the weather has wreaked havoc on their schedule. Their last three matches cover a span of more than three weeks as the Bearkats have had three matches either cancelled or postponed during that stretch.
The Cardinals lead the all-time series, 23-10 (.697), but the two schools have split the previous four matches, with the majority of those meetings coming as conference opponents. Lamar picked up a 4-3 victory last season in Beaumont. Big Red is 9-6 (.600) all-time in Huntsville. Friday's match will take place Friday at 2 p.m. in Huntsville.
Following the match the Cardinals will hit the road for Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on Southern Mississippi. The Golden Eagles are 2-3 (.400) on the season but have dropped two of the previous three matches and are coming off a 4-0 setback at Samford. The Golden Eagles will face New Orleans and Jackson State before hosting LU.
Sunday's meeting will but just the sixth all-time between the two schools with LU holding a slim 3-2 (.600) advantage. The Cardinals are 2-0 all-time in Hattiesburg. Sunday's match is slated for a 11 a.m. start.
