CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team kicked off the 2023 fall season Friday in the opening round of the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open, hosted Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The tournament, which runs through Sunday, is an individual-format tourney that includes players from A&M-Corpus Christi, Utah State, Texas State, Abilene Christian, UT Rio Grande Valley, UIW and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The competition included six flights of doubles and 12 singles flights. The Cardinals posted a 1-6 mark in singles play but came up just short in two other matches as LU pushed its opponents to a third set. The Cards also managed to get two teams in the second round of the doubles competition with a victory and one duo receiving an opening-round bye.

Martina Alcaino put the Cardinals in the win column in doubles play with their 6-3 decision over A&M-Corpus Christi's Manuela Turolo and Isabel Neumer, 6-3. While they were the Cardinals' lone doubles winner Friday Lamar has two teams in the second round with the duo of
Saloni Tamang and
Natalia Turczuk receiving a bye.
Tamang also got in the win column Friday with season debut in singles. She posted a straight--sets decision when she ousted Texas A&M-Kingsville Annika Andersson Gomez, 6-3, 6-1, to move on to the second round.
The Cardinals return to the courts Saturday morning for the second round of action.
