BEAUMONT, Texas - Last week at the Rice University Invitational, Lamar University's women's cross country team took home the team title with a thrilling first place finish by one point over three other teams including host school Rice. Their performance has garnered recognition from the NCAA, who today unveiled them as the NCAA Women's Team of the Week.
While all seven Cardinal runners finished in the top 40, three of the runners finished in the top 10 led by
Nia Clatworthy (14:45.1) who finished third,
Ashton Rainey (14:57.8), who finished fifth, and
Mykayla Mims (15:04.5) who finished eighth. In her first race as a Cardinal,
Khylee Phillips (19th; 15:35.5) ended up in the top 20.
Hailey Cleggett (16:23.5) and
Lauren Baur (16:24.4) finished 30th and 31st while
Natalee Bergeron clinched the win for the Cardinals with a 36th place finish at 16:49.5.
The women's team will be running in two weeks on the 30th as they along with the men will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Chile Pepper Festival.
