BEAUMONT, Texas – In addition to its success on the field, the Lamar University baseball team is also setting a high standard in the classroom. The Cardinals have received the 2022-23 American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award announced organization officials Wednesday evening.
 
The ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award honors baseball teams at all levels of the collegiate game, and high school, who set the standard in the classroom. Lamar was one of 800 programs nationwide to receive the honor. To be nominated for the honor teams must record a 3.0, or higher, grade-point average for the entire academic year.
 
Among the 800 teams to receive the honor, more than 450 came from the collegiate level. Lamar was one of more than 100 NCAA Division I schools to be honored,
 
The Cardinals are one of just six Texas universities named to the list and the lone representative from the Southland Conference.
 
Big Red ended the 2023 season with 32 wins and advanced to the conference tournament as the third-seeded team. It marked the third consecutive run to a conference tournament for the Cardinals who picked up wins over No. 5 Texas A&M, Kansas State, TCU, Houston and Baylor along the way.
