Cardinals, Bears Set for Midweek Showdown

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University hits the road for Waco, Texas Wednesday as they prepare for a showdown with Baylor. The Cardinals enter the midweek non-conference battle looking to start a new win streak after having a tough showing at McNeese last week. Big Red entered last weekend having won five straight and six of seven, but the Cowboys took the first two games of a series that saw two of the three games decided by a single run and the other game a two-run decision.

Despite dropping the series to McNeese, the Cardinals enter the week 27-20 (.574) overall and have had good luck in their midweek games this season. Lamar is 7-5 (.583) in those games with wins over No. 5 Texas A&M, Kansas State, TCU and Houston. Two of the Cards midweek losses have come at No. 1 LSU and a contest at Missouri that saw the Tigers rally late to pull the game out.

Baylor is 16-30 (.350) on the season and is in the midst of one of its toughest stretches of the season. After splitting a doubleheader at No. 13 Texas Tech, the Bears have dropped five of their last six games including being swept by West Virginia and non-conference losses to Tarleton and Abilene Christian. The Bears will host Grand Canyon Tuesday before facing the Cardinals.

The all-time series between the two programs dates back to the 1954 season and has been played 80 times prior to 2023. The Cardinals trail the all-time series, 31-48-1, a mark that includes a 12-28 (.300) record in Waco. The Cardinals enter the game looking for their first victory since 2017 (11-1 in Waco). Last season, Big Red dropped a 5-1 decision to the Bears.

First pitch Wednesday is officially slated for 6:32 p.m. Baylor Ballpark and will be broadcast live on the Big 12 Now Network via ESPN+.
