Cardinals Travel to SFA for Final Non-Conference Series of 2023

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – In an odd quirk to the 2023 schedule, Lamar University is slated to travel to Nacogdoches, Texas for a non-conference series against Stephen F. Austin. The three-game series was originally planned for a Friday, Saturday, Sunday schedule but Mother Nature has altered that plan. The first game of the series, which was slated to begin Friday night at 6:30 p.m. from Jaycees Field has been canceled (with no makeup date set), and there is concern the weather might be altering Saturday's schedule as well.

The Cardinals have won seven of their last nine games including a 9-2 victory at Baylor Wednesday evening. With Wednesday's win, the Cardinals will finish the regular season with a 5-2 (.714) record against Power 5 schools this season.

Big Red now turns its attention to a non-conference weekend series with two weeks to go in the regular season. For those wondering about LU's decision to play a non-conference series so late in the year, it was mandated. Due to the fact that the league has an odd number of teams each school has faced a non-conference weekend during the conference portion of the season (rival McNeese actually closes the regular season in non-conference play).

SFA enters the week four games under .500 on the season (21-25/.457) with a 12-15 record in WAC play. The Lumberjacks have dropped six of their last eight contests. When the two teams finally meet over the weekend it will mark the second meeting of the season. Lamar posted a 2-1 victory over SFA back in February at the Sugar Land Classic.

The history between the two schools is heavily in LU's favor as the Cardinals have recorded a 75-27 (.735) overall record in the series, a mark which includes a 29-15 (.659) record in Nacogdoches. Big Red has won nine of the last 10 meetings, including five of six last season.

With Friday's game officially canceled, the two teams are now expected to start the series Saturday beginning at 2 p.m., but that could change with the forecast. Each game of the series will take place from Jaycees Field and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
